چکیده

Large-scale pervasive public displays networks are becoming an emerging paradigm and represent a radical transformation in the way we think about information dissemination in public spaces. One of the features of pervasive public display systems is their ability to create experiences that span across multiple displays in a coordinated fashion. Proprietary single site display solutions exist but these are not open to third-party developers. On the other hand, scalable open systems that enable large-scale, synchronised and multi-screen experiences, spanning multiple networks domains will call for the definition of multiple administrative boundaries that accommodate function partitioning. In our research, we are studying the key requirements involved in this open application synchronisation and present our initial work on designing a synchronisation model and Application Programming Interface for public displays application developers that is built on top of the PubSubHubbub protocol, an open protocol for distributed publish/subscribe communication on the Internet.

A Novel Method for Measuring the Quality of Temporal Integration in Public Transport Systems

Temporal coordination of services, as a crucial aspect of integration in public transport systems, has always been a big concern for transit planners and schedulers. One of the major issues in the way of coordinating transit services is the lack of a robust measure of effectiveness for assessing the quality of temporal coordination in public transport systems. Even though the network-wide summa...

Privacy-Aware and Scalable Content Dissemination in Distributed Social Networks

Centralized social networking websites raise scalability issues — due to the growing number of participants — and policy concerns — such as control, privacy and ownership of users’ data. Distributed Social Networks aim to solve those by enabling architectures where people own their data and share it whenever and to whomever they wish. However, the privacy and scalability challenges are still to...

Design and evolution of web-based screen management middleware for interactive multipurpose public displays

We present the iterative design and evolution of a web-based screen management middleware developed for a network of interactive multipurpose public displays deployed in a city center since 2009. Themiddleware provides three principal user interface abstractions to content producers, application developers and display owners: the classical passive digital signage, a portal of interactive applic...

A web-based toolkit for remote direct manipulation interaction with public displays via smartphones

Public displays are becoming increasingly interactive but we still need better programming tools that take the burden of adding interaction features to display applications. In this paper, we present a toolkit for web-based, remote, direct manipulation interaction with public display applications. Our toolkit provides high-level controls such as joystick, text input, and multi-touch cursor even...

A power-law distribution of phase-locking intervals does not imply critical interaction

Neural synchronisation plays a critical role in information processing, storage and transmission. Characterising the pattern of synchronisation is therefore of great interest. It has recently been suggested that the brain displays broadband criticality based on two measures of synchronisation – phase locking intervals and global lability of synchronisation – showing power law statistics at the ...
